Silverton, Colorado
Silverton is located in Southwest Colorado and the heart of the San Juan Mountains. Nestled in a mountain valley at 9,318 feet, the Town of Silverton combines unbelievable natural beauty and Victorian charm.

Silverton, with a current population of approximately 500, is a tribute to the survival of a tough mining community, founded in 1874. The entire town has been designated a National Historic Landmark, and is a favorite destination for train fans, history buffs, and outdoor enthusiasts.

The average annual snowfall is 200 inches, and the area has some of the cleanest and clearest air in the U.S., as shown by government research. San Juan County has the highest mean elevation of any county in the United States and is comprised entirely of river and stream valleys and majestic mountains.

From Silverton you can downhill ski at the town's municipal ski hill or at Purgatory at Durango Mountain Resort, which is less than a mile away from the southern end of the San Juan County's line. The Silverton Mountain ski area, located 6 miles north of town, is one of the most advanced ski areas in the nation. It is also one of the only "extreme" terrain ski areas serviced by a chair lift.

Silverton's attractions include the historic Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad and nearby Mesa Verde National Park. Activities include mountain biking, hiking, camping, horseback riding, jeep tours, hunting, fishing, mining tours, skiing, snowmobiling, and more.
